Concept of corrosion protection by Magsure
Mechanism of protective film formation during corrosion
Mgzn2 supplies Mg+2 cations after its dissolution. Afterwards,
Mg+2 cations react with hydroxyl
ions resulting
in the precipitation of Mg(OH)2 whereas Zn+2 anions form
Zn(OH)2 and eventually ZnO. The
precipitation of
Mg(OH)2 causes decrease in the pH resulting in thermodynamically favourable condition
for the
formation of
protective and insoluble simonkolleite
(Zn5C12(OH)8C12H20) film in the presence
of CI- ions and
improvement in
the corrosion resistance.
